The UK Graduate Route is shrinking to 18 months, and your deadline is December 31

Three changes have landed on the UK's post-study work pathway inside twelve months. Individually each one is manageable. Together they compress the window international graduates have to turn a degree into sponsored employment.

Change 1: the Graduate Route drops to 18 months

From 1 January 2027, the standard Graduate visa shortens to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. PhD graduates keep the three-year allowance. Students graduating and applying before 31 December 2026 still get the full two years.

That date is the entire story. Apply before December 31, 2026 and you keep two years. Apply on or after January 1, 2027 and you get 18 months. Six months of job search runway hinges on which side of the line you land.

The knock-on effect is that employers have to speed up graduate recruitment and make sponsorship decisions earlier than they are used to.

Change 2: English requirements went up to B2

From 8 January 2026, new applicants for the Skilled Worker, Scale-up, and High Potential Individual visas must meet a B2 standard, up from B1. That is a real jump in proficiency, requiring more advanced comprehension, expression, and technical language in both written and spoken form. It applies only to first-time applicants: anyone already holding permission under these routes can extend without demonstrating the higher level.

There is a specific trap here. If you hold a Graduate visa and plan to move to Skilled Worker status, the new threshold may be prohibitive if you originally qualified at B1.

If you came in at B1 and a Skilled Worker application is in your plans, book your test now. Do not discover this three weeks before your Graduate visa expires.

Change 3: the salary and skills bar rose

The Skilled Worker route now sits at a £41,700 general salary threshold with an RQF Level 6 skills requirement. If a role does not meet Level 6, it cannot be sponsored through the standard route. Some Level 3 to 5 roles appear on the Temporary Shortage List and can still be sponsored, but workers in those roles cannot bring dependants.

Sponsorship costs have climbed as well. The total five-year cost for a Skilled Worker now runs to roughly £13,900 to £14,100 per worker once visa and health surcharge fees are combined for large sponsors. That number matters to you because it shapes which employers are willing to sponsor at all.

One alternative worth knowing about

The High Potential Individual route targets recent graduates of the world's top 100 universities. The eligible institutions list has expanded, but there is now an annual cap of 8,000 applications running from 1 November to 31 October. HPI usage is expected to double in 2026 as employers look for cheaper alternatives to Skilled Worker sponsorship.

If you graduated from a qualifying institution this route deserves a serious look, and given the cap, early action matters.

The strategic reality

The question is no longer whether the Graduate Route exists, but how well it gets used. For some graduates it becomes a stepping stone into a Skilled Worker visa. For others it passes without a clear transition, usually because of timing, salary gaps, or a lack of sponsorship opportunities.

With 18 months instead of 24, the margin for a slow start disappears. You need to be targeting sponsorship-capable employers at £41,700 and above from month one, not spending the first six months exploring and the next six panicking.
